During the first two semesters, you’ll work across interdisciplinary, practice-led courses such as Concept & Context, Identity & Culture, and Visual Storytelling, building a strong foundation in both the theory and practice of contemporary photography.
This degree prepares you to succeed as a freelance photographer or artist, as well as to take on responsible roles within agencies and creative industries. You’ll develop the skills to collaborate in interdisciplinary and international teams across a wide range of contexts, from art institutions and design studios to advertising, publishing, galleries, and the film and media sectors.
Career paths are diverse, including editorial and commercial photography, artistic practice, content creation, art buying for agencies, picture editing for print and digital media, teaching, curating, or gallery work. The Master of Arts qualification also provides a pathway into academia, enabling you to pursue further research through doctoral or postdoctoral studies.

Field Trip to the Harz Mountains: Visualising the Climate Crisis
In the summer semester of 2025, students from the 4th semester of the Art & Design department at Campus Hamburg explored the theme of forests through a cross-disciplinary lens.
As part of this, the Photography programme—led by Prof. Dr. Nina Röder—organized a field trip to the Harz Mountains. The excursion offered students the opportunity to document and reflect on the visible impact of the climate crisis, including bark beetle infestation and reforestation efforts. Guided hikes with forestry scientist Erik Lembke from the City of Wernigerode provided in-depth context and insight into the region’s ecological transformation.
The project culminated in a series of student works that are now showcased in a permanent exhibition on our Hamburg campus.
