The Photography master’s programme is a project-based degree programme and perfect for students who have completed undergraduate studies at university level in an artistic, design area or photography.
At the UE, you’ll have the unique opportunity to contribute your own personal design skills and background and make something meaningful out of them.
The first two semesters consist of interdisciplinary project-based studies, like History & Theory of Photography or Concept, Identity & Culture. The entire 3rd semester is dedicated to your master’s thesis. This module includes the completion of your thesis, which consists of a design-in-practice part and an academic part.
With a master’s degree, you will have the qualifications required to work successfully as a freelance photographer or artist or to take on a leadership role in an agency or company. You will have the skills and expertise needed to work in interdisciplinary, multicultural and international teams in a wide range of contexts such as art institutions, design agencies, advertising, publishers, magazines, galleries, the film and media industry, or the art market.
Potential career options could be (e.g.) editorial and commercial photographer, artist, art buyer for advertising agencies, online and print picture editor, photography educator, curator or gallerist.
The degree category Master of Arts allows students to pursue an academic career path, including doctorate and postdoctorate qualifications.
Our educational approach is to enable students to discover and fully develop their individual talents. Teaching takes place in small groups in a friendly, informal atmosphere. You will have the opportunity to actively shape your studies and your career path by choosing your own specialisations and selecting courses from a range of interdisciplinary subjects. Our professors will support your individual progress helping you to develop your own distinct signature and to refine your talents and strengths. The master’s programme includes practical projects led by distinguished photographers and artists, as well as international study trips and workshops in New York, Iceland or different cities in Asia to help you prepare for your future career.
In the M.A. Photography you always learn in small groups with a seminar character. Our lecturers are internationally successful and well-known experts in their field and not only impart important knowledge, but also support you individually during your studies.
Whether excursions, specialisation modules or collaboration projects with partners - our interdisciplinary and practically oriented study subjects allow you to tailor your studies entirely to your personal interests, preferences and strengths.
The state-recognised Photography degree programme at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences is available in English - our university has several international campuses and welcomes students from over 100 nations.
Practical experience is essential - that's why we offer the optimal framework conditions for all degree programmes. Take advantage of the MacPools, various photo studios and VR equipment for your projects and prepare yourself optimally for your future professional life.
More flexible, more interdisciplinary, and more practice-oriented - the new Master's programmes make the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) even more attractive! Students of selected MA programmes at UE have the choice of a Master's degree in 60, 90, or 120 ECTS which gives them full flexibility. Students can apply for one of the three options depending on the education they've already achieved and how many ECTS they've already accumulated in their previous Bachelor's (or Master's) courses. Practical experience will also be taken under consideration.

Apply now for your Photography studies! The application deadlines end shortly before the start of each semester, so you can also start at UE at short notice. However, you can apply up to one year in advance - simply fill out our application form online.
In addition, we require a portfolio for the Master's degree programme, consisting of a selection of your projects. How exactly you present yourself and which work samples you would like to include is your own decision. If you still need help with your portfolio, our regular portfolio workshops are a useful option.
Your Portfolio should consist of at least 20 photos. It is particularly desirable to see from the selection of images, that the applicant works on a thematically coherent series.
Important: In the application phase, you must have already decided on which of our degree programmes you would like to study. However, please note that you may change programmes at a later time if desired.
UE is awarding scholarships for young talents in the field of art & design at our Hamburg and Berlin locations every semester. Apply for the Creative Minds Scholarship - not only will you secure financial benefits for your Master's degree, but you will also lay the first foundation for your future career.
