Curriculum | Photography & New Media

In the BA Photography & New Media programme, students develop a strong conceptual and practical foundation, learning how ideas evolve into professional image projects. Photography is understood as a process that combines research, concept development, production, and critical reflection.

The curriculum explores photography within social, cultural, and technological contexts, preparing students for both artistic and commercial fields. Through project-based learning, students gain hands-on experience while working closely with lecturers who are active professionals in the industry.

Technical skills remain essential and include cameras, lighting, analogue processes, digital workflows, and AI-based tools. Alongside practice, students study photographic history and visual culture while building a professional portfolio that reflects their individual direction and prepares them for careers in the contemporary image industry.

Study photography in Berlin

Berlin is one of Europe’s most influential centres for contemporary photography, art, and visual culture, offering an inspiring environment for students of the BA Photography & New Media programme.
The city’s extensive network of galleries, museums, studios, and independent project spaces provides constant opportunities to engage with current artistic and professional practices. Berlin’s layered history and diverse communities create a unique context for exploring social, cultural, and political perspectives through photography.
Major events such as the European Month of Photography (EMOP), in which the University of Europe for Applied Sciences regularly participates, connect students directly with the international photography scene.
Studying in Berlin allows students to build professional networks, gain industry insight, and develop their practice within one of Europe’s most dynamic creative environments

Field Trip to the Harz Mountains: Visualising the Climate Crisis

Students from the BA Photography & New Media programme explored forest landscapes in the Harz Mountains through a cross-disciplinary field study focused on the climate crisis.

Guided by Prof. Dr. Nina Röder, the excursion combined photographic practice with environmental research, documenting visible ecological changes such as bark beetle damage and reforestation efforts.

Expert insights from forestry scientist Erik Lembke of the City of Wernigerode provided scientific context and deepened students’ understanding of the region’s transformation.

The project resulted in a series of student works now presented in a permanent exhibition on campus.

“Studying Photography at UE is a journey through all disciplines of photography—you should try everything before you truly find your path. Photography is not just about creating beautiful images; it’s about telling a story. The most important part of studying here is meeting people, putting yourself out there, and constantly experimenting”
