Film & Motion Design, BA

Our way of communicating, thinking and feeling is characterised by digital, interactive and time-based media. Being able to professionally develop and design within this multidisciplinary creative field is one of the most exciting and forward-looking contemporary activities. In the Film & Motion Design course you will be part of these innovative developments.

In the practice-oriented programme, you will get to know fundamental methods, concepts and techniques for the design of time-based media. From camera work and sound design, analog stop-motion animation, CGI and 3D modelling to digital compositing, hybrid film and visual music, the course offers a wide range of creative expression. In this course you will learn the various methods and techniques of time-based media exclusively from renowned lecturers creative industry. For the realisation of your project ideas you can use the professional equipment, audio and video hardware, post-production and animation software at our university. With the focus on time-based design, the Film & Motion Design course prepares you for a variety of current and future professions in the fields of animation, film, design, scenography and media art. Your job opportunities are as varied as the media landscape itself.

After graduation, you will be expected to have a wide range of interdisciplinary skills as a motion designer, digital designer or film designer. You will be employed or freelance for agencies, television stations, film or game productions, in the entertainment industry, the liberal arts, advertising or knowledge transfer, in the media production of museums, trade fairs, theatres and event stages.

This programme is divided into various modules. In the foundational modules, we’ll first teach you the basic principles and techniques of artistic crafts, such as animation, storytelling, cinematography, sound design, 3D design, editing, post-production and digital composition. After you’ve learned these, you’ll be able to develop your own specialisations in elective modules. You will create music videos, documentary, animation films and experimental short films. You will also design motion graphics, animated logos, explainer videos or spatial multimedia installations.

The theoretical element will cover important historical and contemporary developments in art, film, photography and design. In the 5th semester, you’ll have the opportunity to test out your newly-gained design skills in practice through an internship or a semester abroad.

The interdisciplinary and international concept of the university and the future- and job-oriented Bachelor's in Film & Motion Design prepares you for the first step into the media industry, where both design skills and a growing network count. In the course of your studies, a comprehensive and versatile portfolio is created, which includes projects with cooperation partners from culture, research and business.

  • 5 - 8 work samples in which the moving image is the focus - be it filmed or animated, digital or analog. All kinds of picture series (storyboards, flipbooks) and also other creative projects are welcome. Videos such as MP4, Vimeo, or YouTube links.

Important: When applying, you must choose one of the courses directly. However, you can still change courses later.

We regard our students as creative individuals. We want to foster your individual talents and skills and support you in developing into independent designers and filmmakers. The practice-oriented specialist knowledge and the confidence in conceptual design you will gain will prepare you for the creative industries. The balanced mix of theory and practice will give you a capacity for reflection that will serve you well in your professional life. During the course of your studies you will realise both artistic projects and applied projects. You will acquire a sustainable mixture of theoretical and conceptual knowledge and practical experience. In addition, working in small teams, you will gain important experience in the field of communication and project management.

Through the interdisciplinary modular system of the art and design faculty, and the integrated semester abroad or internship, you can actively shape your studies and career path according to your personal preferences. Our students are sustainably prepared to master the constantly changing professional requirements of the creative industry.
