Prof. Dr. Jiré Emine Gözen is Professor of Media and Cultural Theory at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, where she has also served as Vice President for International Affairs and University Development since October 2023. From 2021 to 2025, she served as Chair of the German Society for Media Studies (Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft, GfM), having been elected for two consecutive terms.
Her research examines the cultural and epistemic processes through which technologies acquire social meaning and contribute to shaping reality. Working at the intersection of media and cultural theory, visual culture, and Science and Technology Studies, she analyses sociotechnical imaginaries in international contexts, with a particular focus on cultural and societal conceptions of artificial intelligence and human-machine relations. Her monograph Cyberpunk Science Fiction. Literarische Fiktionen und Medientheorie (transcript, 2012) explores the interplay between science fiction and media theory, as well as the fictionalisation of theoretical concepts. A central thread connecting this work to her current research is the question of how literary and artistic imaginaries shape technological discourses and, in turn, influence the conceptualisation and development of technologies. Another research focus concerns the visual construction of anti-establishment masculinities and the appropriation of subversive aesthetics in reactionary and authoritarian discourses, including the examples of Playboy and Donald Trump's political self-representation.
She coordinates the research network “Between Utopia and Dystopia: Japanese and Global Entanglements of AI and Robots”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which she initiated together with Dr. Celia Spoden of the University of Tokyo. She was also a co-organiser of the international lecture series “Cross-Cultural Approaches to Desirable AI”, a collaboration between the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, the University of Bonn, the B’AI Global Forum at the University of Tokyo, and the University of Europe for Applied Sciences. The series received the AI ELSI Award from the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence in 2025.
Her academic work is international in scope and particularly shaped by her longstanding connection to Japan. She has been active in Japan's art and academic communities since the mid-2000s, lived in Tokyo for several years, and worked at the Mori Art Museum, among other institutions. From 2009 to 2011, she was a DAAD scholarship holder in the “Sprache und Praxis in Japan” (Language and Practice in Japan) programme and, in 2023, a Visiting Scholar at the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) in Tokyo.
