The consecutive Master‘s study programme Smart Mobility (M.Sc.) is application-oriented and provides students an extensive knowledge in the field of smart mobility, that is a multidisciplinary area that focuses on using technology and innovation to improve transportation and mobility solutions. This includes the study of various components of intelligent mobility systems, such as connected vehicles, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), smart infrastructures, and emerging trends such as autonomous vehicles and electromobility.
Graduates acquire an extensive, detailed and critical understanding of the knowledge necessary to design and engineer electric and autonomous vehicles, considering safety and reliability standards. Furthermore, they are able to acquire new knowledge independently as well as to develop scientific issues and to work on them basing on the current state of the art, in order to develop innovative solutions, do analysis and optimization of transportation systems to improve efficiency, sustainability, and safety.

MSc Smart Mobility

During the course of your studies, you will be taught entirely in English at UE to prepare you for a career in international companies after graduation. This Smart Mobility course follows a forward-thinking curriculum, equipping students with multidisciplinary expertise in intelligent transportation systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, and sustainable mobility solutions. You can complete the Master's in 2, 3 or 4 semesters - thanks to our Master's reform, the programme can be designed flexibly.

Admission Requirements

Here are some things you will require for your application at the UE:

  • Completed admission form
  • CV & Copy of passport
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Good English language skills (at least B2)
  • Basics in Statistics (at least 3 ECTS or a pre-master course at UE)
  • A portfolio is not required

Studying in IHub: Potsdam is a city approx. 25 min by public transport away from Berlin. It was selected in 2017 as one of the 12 digital hubs in Germany. Potsdam offers the highest density of scientiests in Germany. Our campus is next to incubators such as SAP innovation center where over 200 people research AI and Blockchain technologies.

Spotlight Module "Smart Cities & Urban Mobility"

In the Smart Cities & Urban Mobility module, students explore how cities can be transformed through intelligent, sustainable transportation systems. They gain a solid understanding of mobility challenges such as congestion, pollution, and limited urban space, and learn how to design innovative solutions.

The module focuses on transportation systems, data driven modelling, and smart technologies such as connected vehicles, intelligent traffic management, and mobility platforms. Students also examine the role of public transport, policy frameworks, and environmental considerations in shaping future urban mobility.

By the end of the module, students are able to analyse complex mobility systems, apply modelling and simulation techniques, and develop sustainable, technology driven solutions for modern cities.

Graduates of the Smart Mobility (M.Sc.) programme are prepared to shape the future of urban transportation and smart city development. They combine technical expertise with an understanding of urban systems, opening up career paths such as Smart City Consultant, Urban Mobility Planner, Transportation Engineer, or Data Analyst in mobility and traffic systems. They can also work as Intelligent Transportation Systems specialist, Mobility as a Service expert, or Project Manager for sustainable mobility solutions. Opportunities exist across sectors including urban planning, public transport, automotive, logistics, government agencies, and technology companies. With their interdisciplinary skill set, graduates are well equipped to contribute to sustainable urban development, digital transformation, and innovation in mobility systems.

Content of the Course

The course covers the key concepts and technologies shaping smart cities and urban mobility. Students explore transportation systems and their components, including infrastructure, vehicles, and users, alongside challenges such as congestion, pollution, and limited urban space.
Core topics include traffic flow theory, transportation modelling, and simulation methods, as well as the use of data analytics and big data to optimise mobility systems. Students gain insight into Intelligent Transportation Systems, connected mobility technologies, and real time traffic management. The course also addresses sustainable transport strategies, public transit planning, and the impact of emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles.
In addition, students examine policy and regulatory frameworks and the role of governments and stakeholders in developing efficient and sustainable urban mobility solutions.

To enrol in the Master's degree in Smart Mobility at UE, you need a completed Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, good English language skills (at least B2 level), and basic knowledge in Statistics (at least 3 ECTS or a pre-master course at UE). You don’t need advanced programming skills. The programme is designed for students from diverse academic backgrounds. Data literacy and comfort with digital tools are helpful; technical concepts (including data analytics and relevant technologies) are introduced progressively. 

The Smart Mobility Master's programme covers autonomous vehicle systems, connected vehicles, IoT and sensor networks, AI and machine learning for transport, GIS, data analytics, simulation & modelling for transportation systems, intelligent traffic management, and electric vehicle infrastructure. You’ll gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant tools for smart city planning and mobility innovation. 

Thanks to flexible options (60, 90, or 120 ECTS), the programme can be completed in 2 semesters (fast-track, approx. 1 year), 3 semesters (1.5 years), or 4 semesters (2 years) full-time. Part-time study is also possible. The programme includes a research project or thesis and starts in March or September. 

Graduates of the Master's degree in Smart Mobility can pursue roles such as Smart City Consultant, Urban Mobility Planner, Transportation Engineer, Intelligent Transportation Systems Specialist, Mobility-as-a-Service expert, Data Analyst in mobility systems, EV infrastructure manager, or Project Manager for sustainable mobility solutions. Opportunities exist in government agencies, public transport operators, automotive OEMs, logistics companies, urban planning firms, and technology startups.
