Dual Degree Programme in BSc Business Informatics & Data Science

Spotlight Module "IoT for Smart Services"

In the IoT for Smart Services module, students explore how connected devices transform industries and everyday life. They build a strong foundation in IoT technologies and learn how to turn data into innovative, user centred services.
Students analyse how smart services are designed and implemented, with a focus on efficiency, user experience, and business potential. Through case studies and projects, they explore applications in areas such as smart cities, healthcare, mobility, and energy.
The module also covers data flows within IoT systems, including communication protocols like MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP, as well as cloud based service delivery. Key topics such as data security, privacy, and system integration are addressed.
By the end of the module, students can design and evaluate smart service solutions using IoT technologies and data driven approaches.

Prof. Dr. Rand Kouatly

Prof. Dr. Rand Kouatly

Prof. Dr. Rand Kouatly is the programme lead for Software Engineering and Vice Dean for Business at the UE Innovation Hub.

Throughout their studies, students attend in-depth courses, which are also available in other Master’s programmes such as Data Science M.Sc. and Software Engineering M.Sc., as well as study-programme-specific modules. In terms of content, the Master was designed in a way that students will build their knowledge semester by semester, independently of semester intake. In the 4-semesters-programme, students can practically apply their knowledge in a Capstone Project. Otherwise, students choose a specialisation to be handled in their Master’s Thesis,
where they are required to work on a scientific issue.

The subject areas specifically considered in this degree programme include:

- Core IoT Devices and Smart Services Modules
- Advanced IoT Devices and Smart Services Modules
- Project Work
- Electives and Specializations
- Practical Experience
- Soft Skills and Professional Development

Each course is delivered by an industry expert in the subject. Teaching methods include classroom learning practicals and group work; class sizes are kept small to facilitate interaction and to promote effective learning. Each subject is taught at least once a year (and some are taught two) and most can be studied in any order; this helps to provide the kind of flexibility required by students with existing commitments.
