Open call: MAGNUM Photos Workshop 2023

UE is proud to continue the collaboration with MAGNUM Photos in May

The photographer

The self-taught photographer, Newsha Tavakolian, began working professionally for the Iranian press at the age of 16, at the Women’s Daily Zan. At 18, she was the youngest photographer to cover the 1999 student uprising. A year later, she moved to the New York agency Polaris Images.

Newsha Tavakolian is known for her cut-through reportages on the wars in Iraq and social issues in her home country Iran. With clarity and sensitivity, she has photographed guerrilla fighters in Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria, and Colombia, banned Iranian singers and the lives of people living under sanctions. Over the years, her practice has changed from photojournalism to photography as an art form.

She was nominated for Magnum in 2015 and became an Associate in 2017.
