Diversity at UE

At the UE, we thrive off the diversity of our staff and students. Our top priority is to cultivate respectful interactions and ensure all staff and students are protected from discrimination at the university. Diversity and equal opportunity play a major role in life at UE because interdisciplinary boundaries can only be transcended by working together. As such, we oppose all forms of discrimination on the grounds of ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual identity. Dialogue and critical reflection are constantly encouraged at our university. Indispensably, both foster friendships as well as networks around the world and create an inspiring framework for academic scholarship and creativity. At each campus, we cultivate a personalised atmosphere by responding to the unique strengths, life situations and development paths of each individual student and actively support them in their endeavours. However, if students or staff are affected by discrimination, we are here to help.

To ensure that our environment is truly diverse, equitable and inclusive we have appointed a Diversity Officer, Morgan Diakité.

The Diversity Officer is chiefly involved in advocating for students, working on frameworks and protocols for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), and educating staff, students and faculty on these topics.
We aim to ensure that regardless of your background or identity you receive the best education and environment at our university and that we are always progressing on our DEI goals at UE.

UE Value Statement

At the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, we actively foster an inclusive and supportive community that values diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). Home to students of more than 140 nationalities, we ensure every individual, regardless of their background or identity, thrives in their education. In alignment with the Charta der Vielfalt, we strive to create a prejudice-free environment where we value all students, faculty and staff – regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and ideology, sexual orientation and social background.

We support and advocate for environments where every individual feels represented, respected and equally valued. We believe in the power of education to actively shape an environment that fosters critical thinking, innovation and collaboration. Committed to integrity, excellence, and social responsibility, we guide our actions and decisions with these principles to empower students, faculty and staff to positively impact the world, both on and off our campuses.

Gender equality concept

Gender equality has a particularly high priority at UE. To ensure that gender equality is practised, encouraged and monitored at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, a decentralised Gender Equality Officer was elected in 2023. The Equal Opportunities Officer, Prof. Dr Uda-Mareke Risius, works together with all stakeholders (students, lecturers and professors, vice deans and deans) and committees (Academic Senate, Extended University Management, Presidium) of the university on measures to ensure gender equality and to review the effectiveness of existing measures. To this end, the Equal Opportunities Officer has drafted an equality concept, which was adopted in 2023 and will be actively applied in the following 4 years of office.

You can download the concept here. You can reach the Equal Opportunities Officer Prof. Dr. Uda-Mareke Risius by email

Charta der Vielfalt

In November 2023, UE’s sponsoring company, GUS Germany GmbH, signed the “Diversity Charter”. This is the biggest diversity initiative in Germany to promote diversity in companies and institutions. This Diversity Charter was written in 2006 by multiple companies and politicians to highlight the important of diversity in professional culture.
The aim of the initiative is to create a prejudice-free working environment and to ensure that all employees - regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and ideology, sexual orientation and social background – are valued.

Studying with a Disability

UE Support

As students with disabilities, you are within your right to request accommodations or academic adjustments such as adjustable deadlines, or time limits during exams. Other requests are not under the jurisdiction of the university such as personal medical needs and should be covered under state support.

Seeking State Support

Germany has a regulation to support people with certain disabilities. Individuals can be compensated for disadvantages they might be met with due to their disability called “Nachteilsausgleich” where people with disabilities can make use of:

  • Special medical care
  • Assistance in job hunting or protection from dismissal
  • A household helper
  • Support for childcare costs
  • Cost-free use of buses & trains
  • Early retirement
  • Lower taxes

Not every disability is entitled to this support. To see if you qualify for this support you must register for a ‘Disability Card’ where they will quantify the severity of your disability and determine if you meet the criteria. For this, you can register at your local Pension Office (“Versorgungsamt”) at https://schwerbehindertenantrag.de/versorgungsamt-suchen/.

Note: You can apply for a “Disability Card” regardless of your residence status.

If your disability does not meet the required severity, for a “Disability Card” you might still benefit from support in certain cases. You can request help from a counselling center like Migration counselling centre for Adults or a Youth Migration Service where the staff speaks multiple languages.

Scholarships for Promoting Diversity and Innovation

At University of Europe of Applied Sciences we aim to prevent financial barriers from hindering prospective students from pursuing higher education at our university. We believe that socioeconomic status should not limit access to opportunities, so our scholarships aim to limit this barrier.

Our scholarships are an extension to our commitment to equity and access to opportunity and are designed to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds can thrive at UE despite their financial situation and can pursue their goals for academic and personal growth. We have certain scholarship that are for promoting diversity and innovation such us our scholarship for women in tech, DHL scholarship and cultural diversity scholarship.
