Visual Communication: the degree programme at a glance

In the Bachelor's degree programme Visual Communication, you will gain practical expertise and design-conceptual confidence. The curriculum includes focal points such as design thinking, conception, strategy, the development of animated visual projects, information design and storytelling. This degree programme offers a balance between theory and practice-oriented preparation to fully prepare you for a successful professional future.

 

The Bachelor is multi-layered and interestingly clustered. You will learn how to use text, images and films to communicate and develop your own approaches. Realise yourself and your ideas with the support of our colleagues in our studios - in the areas of photography, video, virtual reality, animation, print and prototyping, among others.

 

Our international and intercultural campus in Hamburg provides an ideal basis for this. Our teachers and agency partners are your mentors, because your success is our goal! Throughout your studies, we offer practical phases and excursions where you can apply and improve your newly acquired skills.

 

In the 5th semester, you also have the opportunity to try out your skills during an internship or semester abroad.

With their software skills and creativity, our graduates work in a wide variety of areas after their studies in visual communication - from classic print and digital media to pure online communication.

They work in advertising and communication agencies, as creative professionals in design offices or as independent freelance designers. The clients: companies, public institutions, NGOs, start-ups, publishing houses and many more. - Good communication is needed everywhere and at all times, and the career prospects are correspondingly diverse.

Other concrete professions are, for example:

  • Art director at agencies, communication companies, publishing houses.
  • Motion designer, filmmaker, cameraman, camerawoman, VFX operator,
  • Curator, social media editor, content creator,
  • Illustrator, graphic designer, photographer,

In addition, we require a portfolio for the Bachelor's degree programme in Visual Communication consisting of a selection of your design projects. How exactly you present yourself and which work samples you would like to include is your own decision. If you still need help with your portfolio, our regular portfolio workshops are a useful option.

Assemble a collection of approximately 8 to 12 work samples that effectively showcase your prowess in visual communication. These samples could encompass a range of mediums such as drawings, sketchbooks, collages, photographs, moving images, interactive projects, websites, and various other creative endeavors. Don't hesitate to include sketchbooks as well. Each piece of work should be accompanied by a brief written reflection that offers insight into the project or creation.

Important: In the application phase, you must have already decided in which of our degree programmes you would like to study. However, please note that you may change programmes at a later time if desired.
